The Iseas project studies a number of solutions for the fleet to adapt to this new regulation and to mitigate the economic costs, including an automatic system of sorting and storage of fish on board and an application to avoid fishing areas with the highest proportion of discards. Discarding – returning unwanted catches to the sea – is seen as wasteful, but banning the practice would remove an important food source for many marine organisms.
