The main results of LIFE iSEAS are:Resultados

  • A complete assessment of the actual situation of discards issues on ships selected as project collaborators, focusing on the socio-economic implications and impacts that the policies aiming at the drastic reduction of discards (like the new Common Fisheries Policy – CFP) will have on the fishing sector.
  • The iObserver, a system able to perform the work of a human observer (identifying and quantifying discarded biomass and target catch as well) on-board but without interfering with the normal activity of fishermen. This system will improve the quality and availability of data and knowledge about the status of fishing resources.
  • A data and metadata model and complete range of OGC services (WMS, WFS, WCS, WPS) for acquired discards information on a Fishing Discards Spatial Data Infrastructure SDI, satisfying INSPIRE Directive.
  • A powerful modelling tool to analyze the spatio-temporal conditions of considered fishing areas in terms of discards/stock status. This collated information (from commercial fishing trips, fishing crew interviews and oceanographic research surveys) will be the core to develop quasi real-time policies based on daily-activity data.
  • A real pilot facilities located at Marin Port to process, manage and trade previously discarded biomass landed: the iDPV (Integral Discards Processing and Valorization Point). In relationship with this objective, possible modifications on the selected fishing vessels have to be carried out in order to guarantee the best conditions for keeping the unwanted catch for its future processing at iDVP.
  • An exhaustive analysis of the environmental and socio-economic impacts of proposed solutions for fishing sector communities as well as for the whole region (Galicia), paying special attention on capacity building for better management of unwanted catch and the reduction of discards, particularly, engaging fishing companies in the community-based management of fisheries.
